Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy

Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy or Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy

Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) or Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) or is emerging as an attractive option for treating cancers in the lung, head and neck, prostate, liver and other disease cites outside the central nervous system.  Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy is a non-invasive treatment procedure given at Choice Cancer Care and is similar to SRS, except that it deals with tumors outside the central nervous system.  The objective of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy is to escalate the dose to the target lesion and thus to increase local control while limiting dose to nearby critical structures and normal tissue.  Some requirements of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy program may include precise localization of the target lesion in the treatment planning process; account for tumor motion due to respiration or other changes in the body; highly conformal dose distribution to the target volume including a steep dose gradient to minimize dose to surrounding healthy tissue sparing; and image-guidance at the time of dose delivery for verification and adjustment of the target localization.

How Does Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy Work?

Before Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy treatment, markers are placed around the tumor.  Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy uses an advanced coordinate system to precisely locate the tumor to ensure proper placement of the tracking devices.  During treatment, Choice Cancer Care delivers concentrated, highly focused radiation treatment. The unique mapping provided by the coordinate system plans the radiation to account for a patient’s anatomy, movement from respiration and all other internal or external motion.

Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy may be used to deliver a single high dose of radiation, or several smaller fractioned doses of radiation.  Throughout the treatment, the intensity and direction of the beams are constantly modulated to target the tumor and spare healthy tissue. The beams are also adjusted for any movement from breathing or digestion.
