Radiation Therapy with Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)

At Choice Cancer Care, we are on a mission to help our patients effectively battle cancer while minimizing the potential side effect risks that so often go along with treatment. That’s why we are pleased to offer Radiation Therapy with Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT). This is recognized as the finest technology available to radiation oncologists at this time and it provides patients with the benefits of radiation while minimizing risks thanks to the targeting abilities delivered. This state-of-the-art technology is provided at the Las Colinas Cancer Center.

Why Radiation Is Important

Pre-surgical and post-surgical radiation is often used to help treat a variety of cancers. This therapy involves delivering a dose of radiation to the body in the location of the tumor. Radiation effectively damages the DNA of cancer cells so completely that they die, helping lead to a cure or preventing the likelihood of a recurrence down the road. Radiation treatments, however, are not without side effect risks. Targeting beams to ensure that healthy nearby cells are spared can be problematic. This often requires patients and their oncologists to accept the potential of “collateral” damage in the effort to eradicate cancer cells.

Radiation therapy with IGRT addresses this concern more readily by enabling oncologists to better target treatments for greater precision. This technology provides oncologists with a view inside the body as treatments are being delivered to enable the radiation beam to be altered based on day-to-day tumor movement. This, in turn, can lead to more effective, targeted treatment that is safer for patients in the long run. This imaging is used in combination with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to treat a variety of different forms of cancer.

For patient convenience, Radiation Therapy with IGRT is offered at many of Choice Cancer Care locations. This ensures patients have a treatment location that is known and comfortable to them. It also provides our radiation oncologists with the tools necessary to pinpoint treatments while working to improve patient outcomes.
